About Our Speaker

A Mount Airy native and practicing family-law attorney for four decades, Sarah earned her degree from UNC Greensboro and her law degree from Campbell University. She has served as president of the Surry County Bar Association and briefly as a District Court judge. In 2009 she was elected to the North Carolina House, where she represented Surry and Wilkes counties for more than 17 years. She rose to Speaker Pro Tempore (2017–2025) and chaired the House Elections Law, Judiciary, and Courts Commission committees. Throughout her legislative career she has been a consistent advocate for children, crime victims, election integrity, and applying the law as written rather than legislating from the bench.

Sarah and her husband Edwin have five children. She resigned her House seat in June to devote her full attention to the statewide race against Justice Anita Earls—a contest that will help determine the future direction of our state’s highest court.

Why This Meeting Matters

This November’s Supreme Court race is the only statewide judicial contest on the ballot, and it will help decide whether North Carolina keeps a court that applies the law as written or one that treats the bench as another legislature. Sarah will talk about what she saw in the courtroom and in the committees that write election and criminal statutes—child welfare, public safety, election integrity, and the pressure on judges to invent policy—and how that experience shapes the kind of justice she intends to be.
